Education & Training

The BIOTRANS program focuses on both educating across disciplines and partnering across disciplines, giving our trainees the interdisciplinary knowledge base and collaboration network needed to conduct transformative research and development at the interface between the biological and engineering sciences. The educational framework that we employ is based on the following three stages of interdisciplinary intellectual development.

Step 1: Content Mastery and Community Building

Building foundational knowledge through cross-disciplinary coursework; developing interdisciplinary collaborations through relationships with fellow trainees and BIOTRANS faculty.

Step 2: Interdisciplinary Integration and Professional Development

Experience in cross-disciplinary research rotations; formal training in professional development for industry or academia

Step 3: Interdisciplinary Research

Interdisciplinary team-based grant writing experience; co-advised multi-disciplinary thesis committees to support interdisciplinary PhD research
